Introduction

Information

Morkeskygge represents a complete metamorphosis of Skyrim Special Edition into a dark, challenging souls-like experience. This modlist utilizes Community Shaders for modern rendering techniques while maintaining the grim atmosphere of the frozen north.

Before proceeding, understand that this is a heavy modification requiring approximately 85GB of disk space and a clean installation of Skyrim SE 1.6.x (Anniversary Edition compatible).

Preparation

Before running the installer, ensure your system is properly prepared. Disable OneDrive sync for your Documents folder, turn off Windows Defender real-time protection (temporarily), and close all background applications.

Warning:

Steam must not auto-update Skyrim. Set the game to "Only update when launched" and launch SKSE64 instead of the vanilla executable from now on.

Installation

Download Wabbajack and extract to a folder outside of Program Files
Download the Morkeskygge .wabbajack file from the Nexus or Discord
Launch Wabbajack, select "Install from disk," and point to the downloaded file
Set Installation Location to a folder on the same drive as your game (e.g., D:\Morkeskygge)
Set Download Location (can be on a different drive)
Click Run and wait 2-4 hours depending on your connection

Mid-Installation

Common Problems

Download Errors

Connection timeouts during heavy downloads, Nexus bandwidth limits, or corrupted archives requiring manual verification.

Disk Space

Wabbajack requires double the final size during installation for extraction and temp files.

LoversLab Access

Some mods require premium LL membership; free users may encounter slow download speeds.

Solutions

For Failed Downloads:

Re-run the installation. Wabbajack will resume where it left off. If specific mods consistently fail, manually download them and place in the downloads folder.

For Disk Space Issues:

Ensure at least 180GB free on the installation drive. Use WinDirStat to identify large files that can be moved temporarily.

Post-Installation

What-to-do's

✦ Run Bodyslide for all outfits (Batch Build with "Unified UNP" preset)
✦ Launch Nemesis Unlimited Behavior Engine and update engine + launch behaviors
✦ Copy ENB binaries (dxgi.dll) to game folder if not auto-installed
✦ Launch through MO2 using the "SKSE" executable

Configuration

Once in-game, wait for all messages to finish appearing in the top-left corner. Then access the Mod Configuration Menu (MCM) via pause menu:

If experiencing stuttering or low FPS in dense areas like Whiterun or Riften:

Use BethINI to safely edit these settings without breaking the configuration.

Uninstallation

Clean Uninstall

To completely remove Morkeskygge and restore vanilla Skyrim, follow this sequence to ensure no orphaned files remain:

Delete the Installation Folder

Simply delete the entire Morkeskygge folder. This removes all mods, profiles, and virtual file links.

Clean AppData

Delete %LOCALAPPDATA%\ModOrganizer and %APPDATA%\ModOrganizer

Verify Game Files

In Steam, right-click Skyrim SE → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files

Clean Documents

Delete or rename Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition to reset all INIs and saves.

Note: Saves created with Morkeskygge will not function in vanilla Skyrim. Attempting to load them will result in immediate CTD or corrupted data.
